Embedded stock charts

Seems that the last post stirred a little confusion and inconvenience.  I tried something new — the slick embedded stock charts from freestockcharts.com.  It wasn’t a total success.  They are extremely well done, but there is one very big drawback: the charts are built using Microsoft Silverlight, and require a plugin many readers don’t have.  Silverlight is free, but you shouldn’t have to download a plugin just to see a stock chart.

There is an alternative.  Wikinvest (another site I highly recommend) puts out an embedded stock chart in Flash.  They are pretty impressive as well, but a bit slower.

The charts are for you, and so should be the choice.  Would you rather see charts displayed with: (1) the freestockcharts.com Silverlight charting widget; (2) the Wikinvest Flash charting widget; or (3) neither?  Please put your opinion in a comment or email.

Freestockcharts.com example:  EF Johnson (EFJI)  [Silverlight]

Wikinvest example: EF Johnson (EFJI)  [Flash]

DISCLOSURE:  Long EFJI.  No relationship with freestockcharts.com or wikinvest, other than being a user of both.

Definitely not neither, having a chart is great! As for between the two, I also didn’t have Silverlight, but I was curious to see the difference so I installed it (otherwise I probably would have ignored). How come I can’t interact with the freestockcharts chart? Every time I click anywhere in the chart I get taken to their site? Am I doing something wrong? If not, I’d definitely vote Wikinvest because you can actually play with the chart. And I bet there are a lot of people like me who wouldn’t bother installing Silverlight.

Wikinvest, definitely. I agree with Roger that the freestockcharts are not really “interactive” — you can’t do anything without jumping to that site. But since its a line chart you might want to default to a 3 month period like the freestockcharts is. That makes the recent activity more pronounced.

Definitely Wikivest, shows up on my computer quicker than silverlight and looks great.

Wikinvest charts showed up much faster for me. The silverlight charts took forever on first load and it’s annoying that if you click on the chart at all it takes you somewhere else.

Looks like all 4 of my readers have spoken! Wikinvest it is. Thanks for the input.

    FreeStockCharts.com making me angry, today.
It looks very nice, but seems to be a piece of junk as far as doing anything for free.
