Penny stocks that made it big

The New York Times rarely covers anything but mid and large cap stocks, but today columnist Floyd Norris had a challenge for readers: name a penny stock that has become a big company.  To qualify, the stock must have actually traded under $1, not just on a split-adjusted basis.

Readers provided some interesting picks: blue jeans company True Religion (Nasdaq:TRLI), Nutrisystem (Nasdaq:NTRI) [Ed. note: when NutriSystem traded under $1 I’m fairly certain the symbol was THIN), Apco Argentina (APAGF), Mylan Labs (NYSE:MYL), Imclone (Nasdaq:IMCL), Conqur (Nasdaq:CNQR).

Here’s my pick: Titanium Metals (NYSE:TIE).  You don’t even have to go back that far.  In November 2002, Titanium Metals traded under $1 per share (not split adjusted).  That was just before it went on a tear, rising over a hundredfold over the next five years.

DISCLOSURE: No positions.

How often do you think penny stocks make it big?

  • MS |

@kevin: very, very infrequently. Its much more common for those penny stocks and even non-penny microcaps that experience a phenomenal ascent (lets say 20-fold trough to peak or more) to give back a large portion of the rise.

ZIPI.Pk : The Money Flow Index (MFI) has risen steadily all week as has the On Balance Volume (OBV). The MACD analysis on the stock indicates increasing upward momentum for the stock with a very significant crossover of the zero line earlier last week.
